Study Abroad in Rome: Academics

The Rome program is designed for students who wish to study art, art history, communications, history, literature or Italian language. Previous study of Italian in not required. A minimum of 10 students must enroll for classes to be offered. Classes are held four days a week for four weeks. Credit hours are in parentheses. Credits for each course are equal to American credits based on one credit for a minimum of 15 classroom hours, plus home study. An exam is administered at the end of classes.

Richmond Study Center is located in one of the richest areas of Rome’s historic center. Within a short walking distance are sublime monuments, beautiful piazzas, bustling markets and lively, cosmopolitan neighborhoods. The Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Colosseum and Roman Forum may be reached on foot in a few minutes. Students and faculty regularly congregate in the welcoming spaces of the Study Center to study and socialize.

Attendance is required to receive full credit. Students exceeding the permitted number of unexcused absences may lose all or partial credit.

Grades No AIFS participant is permitted to take a course without receiving a letter grade. Pass/Fail grade options are not available.

Before enrolling for courses, please note that due to the intense summer schedule, several classes are held at the same time. Italian language is not required. A final schedule of classes will be posted on the AIFS website (www.aifsabroad.com) approximately 30 days before the program starts.

Transcripts are issued by the Richmond Registrar’s office in London. One official copy of the transcript will be mailed free of charge to the address specified on your application form. Further copies may be obtained (for an additional fee) by using the Transcript Request Form on the Richmond website www. richmond.ac.uk.
