Grenoble School of Management: Academics
Students should be prepared to adapt to different teaching methods, library facilities and academic environment from that which they have previously experienced.
Attendance
Attendance is mandatory. The only reason for non-attendance is on health or compassionate grounds. Injury or illness must be confirmed by a medical note from a doctor.
Classes
meet 14 weeks each semester with a final exam week. Class sessions are 60 minutes. Students register for courses online and may have to pay an application fee to do so. This will be reimbursed by the Resident Director once students arrive in Grenoble.
Course load
Students take a maximum of 15 credits per semester (13.5 credits of business modules plus 1.5 credits of French language). All students must take French language unless they are native speakers.
Grades
No AIFS participant is permitted to take a course without receiving a letter grade. Pass/Fail grade options are not available.
The system used at all levels of education in France is based on a scale of 20. Exceptional students usually earn between 14 and 16, while grades of 17 and above are rare. A grade of 12 or 13 is good; an average of 10 represents work that merits promotion or the conferral of a diploma. Grading is usually more competitive than in the U.S. At the School, the interpretation of the French 0-20 scale in terms of U.S. grading standards, which appears on the official transcript, is as follows:
| French | U.S. | |
| 18-20 | A+ | |
| 17 | A | |
| 16 | A- | |
| 15 | B+ | |
| 14 | B | |
| 13 | B- | |
| 12 | C+ | |
| 11 | C | |
| 10 | C- | |
| 8-9 | D | |
| 1-7 | F |
Reference
In addition to the reference supplied on application, the Grenoble School of Management may require students to submit a 2nd reference once they have been accepted.
Student advising
The Resident Director provides advice on academic, cultural and local life. She also serves as a liaison between the School of Management, host families and local administrations.
Transcripts
Transcripts are issued by the School of Management for all courses taken. Each transcript shows the module code, the module name, the final grade, the European credits and the alphabetical grade. The transcript does not indicate class hours, the American course number or the recommended units of credit in this catalog. The home institution must approve the amount of credit to transfer.
