Study Abroad in Prague: Housing & Meals
You have two options for housing and meals during the semester in Prague. You can reside in the centrally located Masarykova Kolej residence hall and receive a meal allowance from AIFS or you can choose independent living, finding an apartment through one of two agencies and purchase meals on your own.
If you are an independent living student, you will receive a rebate on the AIFS program fee. If you are interested in this option, you must contact the AIFS Admissions Office to find out the exact amount of the rebate. Please note the rebate is only available to students who notify AIFS of their independent living prior to the payment deadline.
Residence hall
The Masarykova Kolej is conveniently located within walking distance of parks, stores, restaurants, grocery stores and the metro station. In the residence you will reside in a double room. Each room has two beds, chairs, two wardrobes, two desks with drawers, two lamps, and a phone. A kitchenette with a small fridge, a sink, and a hotplate is usually shared by two rooms. There is one private bathroom per suite; it is shared by four people. In the main lobby, there is a 24- hour reception with English speaking staff as well as security guards that protect the premises around the clock.
AIFS always arranges the best accommodation available for students. Changes in housing will be considered only in the event of health and safety issues.
You will receive a meal allowance to subsidize breakfast and lunch or dinner Monday through Friday. You can purchase meals at the University cafeterias, local Czech restaurants, or cook at home.
Please note: this is a subsidy and will not cover the cost of meals in expensive restaurants.
Independent living
You must confirm before the payment deadline if you choose to be “own living” and live in an apartment. Apartments are fully furnished. We advise students to share the cost of the apartment with two or three AIFS roommates.
There are two reliable housing agencies, Expat Experts and Mentis Realty, that can help you find centrally-located apartments at a reasonable cost. A great advantage with these agencies is that the rent is payable from the day you move in until the day you move out. You do not have to sign a long-term lease. If you are interested, you can visit the agencies online at: www.expat-experts-prague.com or www.mentis.cz.
Please note that AIFS does not have direct involvement in any student’s own living arrangements. The contract is between the student and the agency. AIFS will not choose an apartment or confirm the details on behalf of the student.
